The Path to the Path is a 25-minute documentary that tells the story of the decade-long efforts of the leaders of the American Astronomical Society's Solar Eclipse Task Force as they prepared North America for the total solar eclipses of 2017 and 2024.
The passionate volunteers on the SETF have donated thousands of hours of effort to this cause. Their story deserves celebration. And once you hear their stories, you'll see why a total solar eclipse is something that every human must try to experience... at least once.
Since 2014, the American Astronomical Society's Solar Eclipse Task Force has been coordinating national preparations for upcoming eclipses, primarily the total solar eclipses of 2017 and 2024. It functions as a think tank, coordinating body, and communication gateway/hub. The task force is composed of volunteers across many disciplines: professional and amateur astronomers, formal and informal educators, eclipse chasers, science writers, and outreach specialists.
Ella Ross is a documentary filmmaker and multimedia editor from Rochester, NY whose eclipse story started in 2012 at the age of 11, when she started planning to experience the 2017 and 2024 eclipses. When she was 16, she traveled to Missouri for the Great American Eclipse on August 21, 2017. Experiencing totality--and understanding how scientific achievement enables us to predict it accurately to the second--fueled her passion for telling stories of science.
Ms. Ross graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2022.
The American Astronomical Society (AAS) is the major organization of professional astronomers in North America. The mission of the AAS is to enhance and share humanity's scientific understanding of the universe, which we achieve through publishing, meeting organization, advocacy, education and outreach, and training and professional development.
The solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, will be total in a narrow path from Mexico to Eastern Canada and partial to the northwest and southeast. The difference between a total solar eclipse and a partial one is literally the difference between night and day, so get yourself into the path of totality if you can.
Since 2014, the motive forces behind the task force have been SETF project coordinator Dr. Rick Fienberg and SETF Chair Dr. Angela Speck. Dr. Fienberg is Senior Contributing Editor of Sky & Telescope; author of Astronomy for Dummies; and former Public Information Officer for the American Astronomical Society. Dr. Speck is Chair of the Physics & Astronomy department at the University of Texas at San Antonio. In 2022, Debra Ross, publisher of KidsOutAndAbout.com--North America's online community resource for parents--joined Angela as SETF co-chair.
